Amid growing unrest between the Ifon and Ilobu communities in Osun State, security concerns have escalated, prompting urgent intervention by authorities. The simmering dispute, which has spanned over a week, has now erupted into violent clashes, resulting in destruction and loss of life.
Mr. Akeeb Adekunle, spokesperson for the Olufon of Ifon, alleged that the conflict began with a series of targeted attacks on Ifon residents, reportedly carried out by individuals from Ilobu. Despite multiple reports to law enforcement, he stated that no substantial action was taken to de-escalate the situation.
“What transpired last night was nothing short of devastating. Armed assailants, suspected to be from Ilobu, invaded disputed areas, particularly Apenponroro, setting ablaze a Primary Health Centre and several homes,” Adekunle stated. “Tragically, an elderly woman lost her life, and her remains were burnt inside her residence. Many of our people are now fleeing for safety.”
In contrast, Chief Adegoke Ogunsola attributed the violence to attackers from Ifon, accusing them of instilling fear among Ilobu residents and attempting to abduct individuals.
“For weeks, we have lodged complaints regarding recurrent assaults in the Apenponroro section of Ilobu, allegedly executed by Ifon aggressors. Yet, no intervention was made. Just last night, these hoodlums stormed our community, firing gunshots indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze,” Ogunsola recounted. “We implore security agencies to take immediate action to avert a larger catastrophe.”
In light of the deteriorating security situation, Governor Ademola Adeleke has taken decisive measures to quell the violence and prevent further escalation. Initially imposing a 12-hour curfew, the governor has now extended the restriction to a full 24-hour lockdown to restore peace.
A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, detailed the state’s approach: “Governor Ademola Adeleke has intensified peace-building efforts concerning the Ifon-Ilobu conflict, enforcing a 24-hour curfew, mobilizing a joint security task force, and facilitating discussions aimed at resolving the crisis between the two communities.”
As the unrest continues, mass displacement has been observed, with affected residents seeking refuge in safer areas. Reports indicate that large groups of displaced persons, including northern settlers, were seen evacuating the region in buses, particularly through Okinni on Saturday.
With tensions still high, Osun Police spokesperson Akeem Adeoti has reassured the public that security forces have been deployed to restore normalcy. Authorities continue to monitor the evolving situation, urging all parties involved to exercise restraint while mediation efforts are underway to secure lasting peace, as others call for presidential intervention
