Breaking News:
“Several residents in Anambra have tragically lost their lives in a stampede during a rice-sharing event in the Okija community. According to a video shared by an eyewitness via Sahara Reporters’ X handle, the overcrowded gathering turned chaotic, leading to the unfortunate incident. More details to follow soon.” You can watch the video here

The tragic stampede that occurred during a rice-sharing event in Okija, Anambra State, on Saturday has claimed 22 lives, according to SP Toochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Command. The annual food distribution initiative, organized by philanthropist Obi Jackson, was intended to support vulnerable families in the community and neighboring areas during the festive season.

An eyewitness attributed the tragedy to the pervasive poverty in Nigeria, blaming political leaders for creating conditions where citizens rely heavily on private initiatives for survival.

Calls for decentralizing palliative distributions have grown, with recommendations for items to be distributed at village levels to avoid overcrowding. Stakeholders have also emphasized the need for adequate security and crowd control at such events.

Prominent figures have expressed their condolences and called for systemic change to prevent future tragedies.

Barth Nwibe, a governorship aspirant in the November 2025 Anambra elections, described the incident as a stark reminder of the economic challenges facing the nation.

“It is devastating that people lost their lives while trying to get food to survive,” Mr. Nwibe said. “This speaks volumes about the level of hardship in our society. My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the deceased and the people of Ihiala.”

Akai Egwuonwu, Managing Director of Stine Mill Industries, producers of Anambra Rice, emphasized the need for safety protocols during charitable events.

“While the intentions behind such initiatives are noble, organizers must prioritize the safety and well-being of beneficiaries,” Mr. Egwuonwu said.

“This is a tragedy too many,” Mr. Obi lamented. “What should have been an act of kindness has turned into sorrow and grief for many families. It underscores the need for empowerment and self-reliance to reduce such desperation in the future.”

Mr. Obi also encouraged the Obijackson Foundation to continue its philanthropic efforts despite the setback, urging them to incorporate safety measures and decentralized planning for future distributions.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed an ongoing investigation into the incident, with assurances that measures will be implemented to prevent a recurrence.

The Okija stampede serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for economic reforms and safety prioritization in public gatherings. As communities mourn the loss of lives, the focus shifts toward ensuring such tragedies are never repeated.
