The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning against unorganized distribution of palliatives and unauthorized funfairs during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. This caution follows a series of tragic stampedes in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija that resulted in significant loss of life and injuries.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the Inspector-General emphasized the need for a structured and secure approach to aid distribution to prevent further calamities.
On December 18, 2024, a stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, claimed the lives of at least 35 children and left many others critically injured. Similarly, on December 21, 2024, a tragic stampede occurred at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, during the distribution of food items, resulting in 10 fatalities and numerous injuries.
Another stampede at a palliative distribution event organized by philanthropist Obi Jackson in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, led to the deaths of three individuals, with several others injured and receiving medical attention.
The Inspector-General stressed the dangers of poorly planned distributions, noting that such activities often lead to chaos, long queues, and confrontations. He urged government officials, community leaders, and NGOs to collaborate on creating a comprehensive framework to ensure palliatives are distributed safely and efficiently.
To prevent future tragedies, the IGP mandated that all organizers of aid distribution and similar events involve security agencies to ensure orderliness. He further warned that negligence leading to loss of life or injuries would be treated as a criminal offense under the Penal Code and Criminal Code.
The Nigeria Police Force has commenced investigations into the incidents, with Commissioners in the affected states directed to carry out thorough inquiries to determine culpability and recommend legal actions.
In expressing his condolences, the Inspector-General sympathized with the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also urged the public to exercise caution during such events, prioritizing their safety to avoid preventable disasters.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at fostering a safer environment for aid distribution in collaboration with stakeholders..
