Kaduna, Nigeria – The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly arrested Kaduna-based activist and whistleblower, Mahdi Shehu, following his claims regarding the establishment of a French military base in Nigeria’s North-West region. According to Sahara Reporters

Shehu, known for his critical stance on government policies, was apprehended over the weekend after a controversial video he shared went viral. The video, which allegedly contained outdated footage, implied that the Nigerian government was collaborating with France to set up a military installation in the region. Despite deleting the video, its wide circulation had already sparked national security concerns.

According to Zagazola Makama, a security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Shehu is currently in DSS custody in Kaduna. Sources revealed that plans are underway to arraign him in court, with assurances that his rights are being respected during detention.

When contacted, Shehu’s lawyer, Mustapha Abubakar, confirmed the arrest but noted he learned about it through the activist’s family, as he was not in Kaduna at the time. Abubakar refrained from providing further details, citing limited information on the situation.

The DSS has yet to issue an official statement on the arrest.

Commenting on the broader implications of security challenges in the region, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Musa stated:
“National security is not solely the responsibility of the military. It requires a collective effort. Unfortunately, some individuals exploit religious and ethnic sentiments to mislead communities.”

Musa further cited historical precedents, warning against deceptive alliances. He referenced the Lakurawa, a group that initially appeared friendly but later posed significant security threats, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant against such betrayals.

This is not the first time Shehu has faced legal challenges. In February, he was detained by police in Abuja following a petition allegedly filed by the former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and his family.

Sources close to the matter revealed that the petition, submitted through Malami’s law office, accused Shehu of making inflammatory statements and demanding accountability from members of the former administration. Shehu’s lawyer previously suggested that these actions might be attempts to silence the activist.

Shehu’s recent allegations come amidst heightened tensions between Niger’s military leadership and the governments of Nigeria and France and his stance not to ignore the allegation. Niger’s military president recently accused both nations of supporting terrorism and fostering instability in the region. These claims have fueled debates about foreign involvement in Nigeria’s internal security affairs, further amplifying the controversy surrounding Shehu’s video.

The arrest underscores the delicate balance between national security and freedom of expression in Nigeria, particularly concerning sensitive geopolitical matters.

As the story develops, stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation to ensure adherence to legal and human rights standards.
