The Obidient Movement has raised concerns over recent comments made by Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), during a weekend interview with Arise News. Morka criticized Labour Party leader Peter Obi, accusing him of repeatedly crossing the line on national issues. He suggested that Obi should “manage whatever he gets,” a remark interpreted by some as a veiled threat.
Dr. Yunusa Tanko, spokesperson for the Obidient Movement, described Morka’s comments as a dangerous precedent, labeling them a potential threat to Obi’s safety. Tanko further warned that such rhetoric signals an alarming slide into authoritarianism under the APC-led administration.
In a statement on his official X account, Peter Obi echoed this concern, stating, “We are increasingly transforming into an authoritarian and repressive regime where freedom of expression is being systematically suppressed.”
The APC, however, responded on its X account, dismissing the allegations and accusing Obi’s supporters of spreading misinformation. The party claimed Morka’s comments were being misconstrued, adding, “After losing the argument, typical Obidients have resorted to spreading false and malicious information.”
During his appearance on Arise News, Morka criticized Obi’s tenure as Anambra State governor, describing it as lackluster. He argued that Obi, instead of addressing the reasons for his 2023 presidential election loss, has resorted to “maliciously deceptive” commentary aimed at discrediting the government.
In his remarks, Morka stated, “For a man who was governor for eight years and left no legacy or transformation, he should focus on learning from his defeat rather than trying to bring down the government. He has crossed the line too many times, and whatever comes his way, he should manage it.”
The comments have drawn widespread criticism, with many interpreting them as an attempt to stifle opposition voices.
Reacting to the situation, Hon. A, a former Labour Party governorship aspirant in Anambra State, urged the APC to address the pressing needs of Nigerians instead of attacking opposition figures. Speaking on Arise News, he stated, “Threatening opposition leaders for speaking out is unacceptable. Peter Obi has done nothing but highlight areas where the government should focus its efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians.”
He further condemned Morka’s remarks, suggesting they reflected a broader intolerance of dissenting opinions. “Democracy thrives on constructive criticism, and it’s absurd to frame legitimate concerns about governance as crossing a line,” he added.
The Obidient Movement, meanwhile, reiterated its commitment to peaceful engagement, urging the government to prioritize its campaign promises to Nigerians. “People are hungry, infrastructure is failing, and public services are in dire straits. These are the issues Peter Obi has consistently pointed out, and instead of addressing these concerns, the APC is focused on silencing him,” said Tanko.
As the political climate grows increasingly tense, the Obidient Movement called on all political actors to foster an environment of respect and inclusivity. They emphasized the importance of safeguarding freedom of expression, which remains a cornerstone of democracy.
The APC has yet to issue a formal statement addressing calls for Morka to retract his comments.
