The Nigerian Armed Forces have recorded significant achievements in their ongoing counterterrorism efforts, launching a series of operations that resulted in the elimination of over 100 insurgents and the arrest of numerous suspects during the first week of 2025.
Announcing these successes on Friday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, emphasized the military’s commitment to eradicating terrorist activities and protecting citizens across the country.
Maj. Gen. Edward revealed that coordinated operations across various regions led to the neutralisation of 109 terrorists, the arrest of 81 suspects, and the rescue of 43 individuals who had been held hostage.
In the northeast, troops under Operation Hadin Kai were responsible for eliminating 64 terrorists, apprehending 28 suspects, and freeing 14 kidnapped victims.
Further success was recorded in Niger State on January 3, 2025, when the air component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA carried out targeted airstrikes in Alawa Forest, Shiroro Local Government Area. The strikes destroyed insurgent hideouts and logistics hubs while dealing heavy casualties to the enemy.
Nationwide, Operation FANSAN YAMMA troops neutralised 21 terrorists, detained 24 suspects, and safely rescued five hostages during their missions in the northwest.
In the south, military efforts extended to combating economic sabotage, as troops in the Niger Delta intercepted crude oil thieves and dismantled illegal refining sites. Six individuals were arrested, and stolen crude oil worth an estimated ₦618.8 million was recovered.
Troops also destroyed 10 illegal refining facilities, 12 boats, and 10 crude oil processing ovens, effectively crippling the operations of those involved in the illicit trade.
Maj. Gen. Edward called on citizens to stay vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, reiterating that the armed forces are dedicated to safeguarding national security.He concluded by saying, “The effectiveness of our operations continues to grow, and Nigerians can expect even greater successes as the military remains resolute in defending the nation.”
