In a tragic incident, a Nigerian military airstrike intended to target armed groups in Zamfara State’s conflict-ridden northwest has mistakenly killed several civilians. The victims were members of community security outfits, according to official statements and local residents.
The Nigerian Air Force was conducting operations against bandit groups in the Zurmi and Maradun areas when the misfire occurred. Sulaiman Bala Idris, spokesperson for the Zamfara State governor, confirmed on Sunday that members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local vigilante groups were mistakenly identified as bandits and struck during the operation in Tungar Kara.
“Regrettably, some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and local vigilantes were also affected during the operation in Tungar Kara, resulting in the loss of lives,” Idris stated. He emphasized that they were mistakenly identified as fleeing bandits.
While officials did not disclose the number of casualties, Salisu Maradun, a local resident, reported that up to 20 bodies were recovered, and 10 others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.
The Nigerian Air Force has launched an investigation into the incident and assured the public of its commitment to minimizing civilian casualties. “The safety and well-being of all Nigerians are of utmost importance in our mission,” the Air Force said in a statement.
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of accidental civilian deaths resulting from military airstrikes in the region over the past year, raising concerns about the need for improved targeting measures and better intelligence to prevent further tragedies.
