The Federal Government has responded to recent remarks by His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, concerning the ongoing economic reforms introduced under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Speaking at a public event in Lagos, the Emir acknowledged the importance of the reforms but indicated a personal decision to refrain from publicly endorsing them.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the Emir’s stance as disappointing, emphasizing the need for constructive contributions from all leaders at this critical juncture in Nigeria’s history. “It is regrettable that a leader of Emir Sanusi’s stature, who has consistently advocated bold reforms, now appears hesitant to support necessary measures for personal reasons,” Idris stated in a press release issued on Thursday.

Idris highlighted that the reforms undertaken by the administration are essential steps toward addressing decades of economic mismanagement. These measures, though challenging in the short term, are already yielding measurable progress.

“The unification of exchange rates has bolstered investor confidence, increased foreign reserves, and strengthened Nigeria’s economic resilience,” the Minister noted. He also underscored the positive impact of the removal of fuel subsidies, which has freed resources for reinvestment in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Projections from respected institutions like the World Bank indicate an upward trajectory for Nigeria’s GDP, signaling recovery and growth. According to Idris, the reforms are also addressing inefficiencies, reducing the debt service-to-revenue ratio, and laying the foundation for sustainable fiscal management.

The Federal Government called on Emir Sanusi and other influential leaders to prioritize the collective interest over personal grievances or partisan considerations. “His Highness has a unique responsibility, given his economic expertise, to contribute constructively to the discourse rather than undermine initiatives designed for Nigeria’s long-term benefit,” Idris emphasized.

Idris appealed for unity, collaboration, and sacrifice from all stakeholders to rebuild Nigeria. He also urged leaders to refrain from rhetoric that could erode public trust in the government’s efforts.

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment, Idris stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government is determined to lead Nigeria toward economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity. The government remains open to dialogue with well-meaning Nigerians and stakeholders who are committed to the nation’s progress.

“The challenges we face demand courage and unity,” Idris said. “Let this moment be remembered as a turning point when leaders and citizens alike prioritized the nation’s destiny over personal gain.”

The Minister concluded by calling for collective action, noting that the success of these reforms will pave the way for renewed hope and a better future for all Nigerians.
