Ukraine is marking the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion amid fresh territorial gains by Moscow in the eastern Donetsk region. The Kremlin claims to have seized two more villages, further consolidating its control over the war-torn area.
These developments come as the United States engages in peace talks with Russia—without Ukraine’s participation. Moscow has confirmed that it will hold another round of discussions with Washington in the next two weeks. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reaffirming Britain’s continued support for Ukraine.
The decision by the U.S. to exclude Ukraine from negotiations with Russia has sparked outrage in Kyiv. The diplomatic tensions escalated further after U.S. President Donald Trump referred to Zelensky as a “dictator” and accused him of doing nothing to stop the war.
However, Trump has since walked back some of these remarks, acknowledging that Russia, under President Vladimir Putin’s orders, was responsible for the invasion. Despite this admission, he maintained that Zelensky has failed to bring the conflict to an end and suggested that Ukraine’s involvement in peace negotiations is not essential.
Amid uncertainty over U.S. policy, Zelensky has emphasized efforts to preserve ties with Washington. Speaking on the matter, he revealed that Ukrainian and American officials are working on a draft agreement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
“This agreement has the potential to reinforce our partnership,” Zelensky stated. “The details must be arranged to ensure it serves both nations effectively. I hope for a fair result.”
The United States remains Ukraine’s largest provider of military and humanitarian aid. Many analysts question whether Ukraine could sustain its defense efforts without American support. Military experts estimate that current supplies may last another six months, but troop numbers are rapidly dwindling—a growing concern as the war drags on.
While diplomatic maneuvering continues, the conflict remains active on the ground. Over the past week, Russia has captured seven additional villages in Donetsk and Kharkiv regions, as well as some areas in Russia’s Belgorod region, which Ukrainian forces had partially occupied following a cross-border incursion in August.
As the war nears its fourth year, there are no signs of de-escalation. The U.S. shift in diplomatic strategy has unsettled European allies, with fears growing that Ukraine may ultimately be pressured into a peace deal favoring Moscow.
