Kaduna, Nigeria – The Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan has confirmed the tragic death of Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu, who was murdered just a day after being abducted from his residence. His killing adds to the growing list of Nigerian priests who have fallen victim to kidnappings and violent attacks in recent years.
Fr. Okechukwu’s abduction and murder have once again raised alarm over the security situation in Nigeria, particularly the increasing targeting of Christian clergy. Many Catholic priests across the country have been kidnapped, attacked, or killed, with religious leaders calling for urgent intervention.
Church officials and Christian groups have condemned the continuous attacks, stating that priests have become an endangered group in Nigeria. “How long will this bloodshed continue?” one cleric lamented, urging the government to take decisive action to protect religious leaders and their communities.
The worsening security crisis has drawn international attention, including from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has previously expressed concern over the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Trump has vowed to support the Christian community in the country, condemning the persistent violence and calling for stronger global action to protect religious freedom.
With the killing of Fr. Okechukwu, the Catholic Church and Christian organizations continue to call for justice, emphasizing that “silence is no longer an option.” They demand an end to the violence that has claimed the lives of many innocent clergymen and worshippers across the country. As the nation mourns yet another priest, the question remains: How many more must die before real action is taken?
