Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, met with Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, to discuss strategies for strengthening opposition politics and fostering national unity.

Following their closed-door meeting at the Government House in Bauchi, Governor Mohammed emphasized his commitment to unity and inclusive leadership, recognizing Obi’s efforts in engaging key stakeholders on national issues.

“Today, I had the honour of receiving the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, H.E Mr. Peter Obi, along with his entourage. During our discussions, I reiterated my unwavering commitment to fostering unity and combating division, emphasizing that patriotism remains the foundation of a brighter future for our nation,” Mohammed stated.

He commended Obi for his dedication to nation-building and national discourse, highlighting the importance of collaboration among opposition leaders.

“We have a lot of respect and admiration for him because of his style of politics, his statesmanship, his versatile nature, and his deep knowledge of the economy and governance,” he added.

Mohammed further revealed that their discussions touched on key national issues, including political challenges in Rivers State and the broader landscape of opposition politics in Nigeria. He stressed the need for a unified and strategic opposition to provide credible leadership alternatives.

“I appreciate what he is doing as a leader of the opposition because, whether we like it or not, he is now the face of opposition politics in Nigeria,” he said. “I want to say clearly that I am ready to work with Peter Obi. We must come together to bring good governance, offer a vibrant opposition with vision and strategy, and rescue this country from mediocrities parading themselves as leaders.”

Obi, in his remarks, noted that his visit served multiple purposes, including offering condolences for recent losses, engaging in meaningful discussions on national issues, and strengthening consultations with key political stakeholders.

“Nigerians may wonder why I am here, but I have come to consult with him because he is a critical stakeholder in Nigerian politics,” Obi explained.

He underscored the need to address poverty as a fundamental step in combating insecurity, particularly in the North.

“When people talk about criminality in Nigeria, especially in the North, I tell them the real issue is poverty. Until we address poverty, we cannot solve criminality,” Obi stated.

He further emphasized the importance of investments in education and agriculture to drive economic growth and improve citizens’ welfare.

“But look at what dominates our political discourse today—budget padding, sexual harassment—while Nigerians are hungry. We need to discuss hunger, poverty, education, and healthcare,” he added.
