Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, has described the prolonged political crisis between him and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as an unexpected catalyst for his increased governance independence. Despite multiple reconciliation efforts, including interventions from President Bola Tinubu and other political leaders, tensions have persisted for over a year, escalating to a point where the president recently declared a state of emergency in Rivers State to restore order.
During a meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt with the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Henry Ndukauba, and other bishops, Governor Fubara reflected on the situation and its impact on his leadership.
“The ways of God are profound. Perhaps if there had been absolute peace, I might not have attained the level of autonomy I now experience in governance,” he remarked.
The governor also took the opportunity to appreciate the Anglican Primate for his persistent efforts to mediate between the feuding parties, despite the lack of a resolution.
“When the turmoil began, he made countless efforts to broker peace, reaching out through calls and seeking meetings. Although those efforts did not yield the anticipated results, I remain deeply grateful for his dedication,” Fubara stated.
He further reflected on the paradoxical nature of conflicts, emphasizing that while challenges may disrupt stability, they can also lead to stronger governance structures.
“Sometimes, difficulties arise as a means to establish a more profound sense of order. However, this does not imply that we should embrace conflict. Sustainable peace remains the foundation for growth and development,” he emphasized.
With the federal government now actively involved in resolving the crisis through a state of emergency, the political standoff continues to shape the governance landscape in Rivers State. As the situation unfolds, Governor Fubara remains resolute in utilizing his strengthened autonomy to implement lasting reforms and ensure sustainable progress for the state.
