Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has issued a strong warning against a planned political gathering linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, stating that the event poses a potential threat to the state’s peace and stability.
Speaking at the 37th State Security Council meeting, Governor Douye Diri made it clear that no state-owned facility should be made available for the event. He directed security agencies to be on high alert, emphasizing that Bayelsa will not tolerate any activity capable of inciting political tension.
“Some individuals, particularly George Toner, are attempting to destabilize Bayelsa State. Recently, a Facebook report linked to Toner indicated plans to host the FCT Minister at Tomia Roundabout. Let me be clear: this is Bayelsa, not the FCT. Service commanders must ensure that such a meeting does not take place within our state,” the governor warned.
He further instructed that no public infrastructure—including schools, event centers, or any other government-owned property—should be used for political gatherings without explicit approval from the state government.
According to reports, Governor Douye Diri is currently hosting the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, amid ongoing political tensions in the neighboring state. While the Rivers State House of Assembly has publicly stated that Fubara’s suspension is a result of internal legislative disputes, sources suggest that his political rift with Wike played a significant role in the decision.
Wike, a former Rivers governor and now FCT Minister, has been at the center of political turmoil in the state, with allegations that his influence contributed to the crisis leading to Fubara’s suspension.
Governor Diri, in his remarks, indirectly referenced these political developments, stating that Bayelsa would not allow “the importation and exportation of insecurity” into the state. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order, stressing that any gathering linked to individuals seen as security risks will not be permitted.
Security agencies have been placed on high alert to enforce the directive and prevent any disruption to Bayelsa’s peace.
