Earlier, we reported the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal 1446AH, with an official announcement expected from the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
Now, in a follow-up statement, the Sultan has confirmed that Sunday, March 30, 2025, will be the 1st of Shawwal 1446AH, marking the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr across Nigeria. This declaration officially brings the fasting period of Ramadan to an end.
He congratulated Muslims on the successful completion of the holy month and encouraged them to uphold the virtues of patience, piety, and charity beyond Ramadan.
Earlier Uncertainty Over Moon Sighting.
Before the official confirmation, the Sultan had previously stated that if the moon was not sighted in Nigeria, fasting would continue on Sunday, and Eid would be observed on Monday, March 31, 2025. However, with the confirmed sighting, the celebration will take place on Sunday and the federal government have stipulated monday 30 th and tuseday 31 as public holiday.
In recognition of the occasion, the Federal Government has declared Monday, March 30, and Tuesday, March 31, as public holidays to allow Muslims across the country to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr.
Global Observations of Eid-el-Fitr.
Beyond Nigeria, Saudi Arabia—home to Islam’s holiest sites—also confirmed that Sunday, March 30, 2025, will be the first day of Eid-el-Fitr, as announced by the Royal Court through the Saudi Press Agency. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar have also declared Sunday as the start of the holiday.
However, Oman and Iran have announced that Eid-el-Fitr will begin on Monday, March 31, 2025, based on their independent moon sighting reports.
As Muslims worldwide prepare for this joyous occasion, the Sultan of Sokoto urges the faithful to continue embodying the spirit of Ramadan through acts of kindness, unity, and faith.
