In a significant development, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has strongly criticized Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, for reportedly urging the Body of Benchers to take disciplinary action against human rights lawyer Chidi Odinkalu. The organization insists that this move is politically motivated and constitutes an attempt to stifle legitimate dissent.
Highlighting concerns over democratic values, SERAP has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately intervene by restraining Wike from using intimidation tactics against Odinkalu. The group maintains that targeting individuals for lawfully exercising their rights undermines the judiciary’s independence and weakens public trust in Nigeria’s legal system.
The demand for disciplinary action against Odinkalu, SERAP argues, aligns with a troubling trend of increasing hostility towards activists, journalists, and human rights defenders in Nigeria. The organization stressed that such actions threaten the fundamental freedoms that underpin democracy and must be decisively addressed.
Under international legal frameworks, including the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, governments are obligated to ensure that legal practitioners can perform their duties without fear of harassment, undue pressure, or retaliatory actions. SERAP warns that failing to uphold these standards risks further eroding Nigeria’s commitment to justice and accountability.
Furthermore, SERAP reiterated that the Nigerian Constitution (1999, as amended), along with various human rights treaties, safeguards the rights to freedom of expression, belief, association, and peaceful assembly. Lawyers, like all citizens, must be allowed to engage in legal discourse and advocacy without facing professional repercussions or politically motivated sanctions.
