The Supreme Court has overturned the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
In a unanimous verdict delivered on Friday, a five-member panel of the apex court ruled that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to declare Abure as the party’s chairman. The justices emphasized that the case primarily concerned the leadership structure of the LP—an internal party matter over which courts do not have jurisdiction.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court noted that Abure’s tenure as chairman had already expired. Consequently, the court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and another appellant, declaring it meritorious.
Additionally, the court dismissed a cross-appeal filed by the Abure-led faction of the LP, describing it as lacking merit.
