Awka, Anambra State – April 5, 2025 — Political activities in Awka were momentarily thrown into disarray on Saturday morning as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary encountered early disruptions. However, normalcy has since been restored, with the process now expected to officially commence by 1:00 PM, according to party sources.
The disruption was reportedly triggered by supporters of an aspirant from Anambra South, who allegedly barricaded the venue gates and selectively admitted only delegates loyal to their candidate. This exclusion reportedly occurred in full view of security operatives, raising concerns about fairness and transparency.
In response to the growing tension, police officers on site resorted to using teargas to disperse the crowd and regain control of the situation. Order was re-established following the arrival of another governorship aspirant, Professor Obiora Okonkwo. His intervention and discussions with security personnel led to the gates being reopened, granting access to all accredited delegates.
As the atmosphere calmed, many delegates who had earlier fled the venue began to return for accreditation, setting the stage for the primary election to proceed as planned.
Saturday’s primary comes amid growing controversy within the APC. On Friday, leading contender Sir Paul Chukwuma resigned from the party, citing alleged irregularities and claims that the process was being manipulated to favor another aspirant.
Adding to the tension, unconfirmed reports on Saturday morning suggested that another aspirant, Chukwuma Umeoji, may also be considering withdrawal for similar reasons. While no official statement has been released, sources within the party hint at deepening internal fractures that could impact the outcome of the exercise.
In a related political development, across party lines, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) on Saturday reaffirmed its confidence in incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo by electing him unopposed as the party’s governorship candidate. The uncontested endorsement further solidifies Soludo’s position ahead of the forthcoming Anambra gubernatorial election, contrasting sharply with the internal strife currently rocking the APC.
The unfolding events in both major parties reflect the high stakes and shifting alliances shaping the race for Anambra’s top political seat.
