In a renewed diplomatic move, the Nigerian government has commenced the screening of prominent political figures and technocrats for ambassadorial appointments, signaling an imminent announcement of new envoys.
Among those undergoing vetting by the Department of State Services (DSS) are notable individuals such as former Senator Shehu Sani who recently decamped to APC, ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri, and former governors of Abia and Enugu States, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. The list also reportedly includes Fola Adeola, founder of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc; former Lagos State Deputy Governor Femi Pedro; and former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode.
Although the list of nominees has yet to be officially released, sources familiar with the process disclosed that screenings are in advanced stages. One of the nominees, who confirmed their inclusion anonymously, stated that the process is being handled with strict confidentiality.
A senior presidency official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, explained that the delay in publishing the names is due to the ongoing security clearance procedures. “Only individuals who successfully pass security vetting will be officially announced. The screening is still underway, and a comprehensive list is expected before the month ends,” the source told Vanguard.
This development follows the government’s recall of all Nigerian ambassadors from foreign missions in 2023, a decision that left several diplomatic seats vacant. The latest appointments are part of efforts to fill those gaps with qualified individuals.
Presidential media aide Bayo Onanuga had earlier emphasized the importance of a thorough selection process, noting that ambassadorial nominations must meet specific standards before submission to the National Assembly for confirmation.
As diplomatic repositioning continues under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the forthcoming ambassadorial appointments are expected to reflect a strategic blend of experience, political relevance, and technocratic expertise aimed at advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy agenda.
