Bassa, Plateau State – Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has called on youths across the state to take proactive steps in defending their communities against relentless attacks by armed assailants. The governor made this passionate appeal during a visit to the Kwall District in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA), where the Zike and Kimakpa communities were recently ravaged by gunmen.

Speaking to displaced residents, Governor Mutfwang emphasized the urgent need for community-based vigilance and protection strategies in the face of growing insecurity.

“Nigeria has reached a point where every community must rise to defend itself. While I do not support lawlessness or taking the law into one’s hands, we cannot afford complacency,” he stated.

The deadly attack, which occurred on Sunday night, left several people dead and properties destroyed, further compounding the security crisis plaguing the region.

Governor Mutfwang expressed deep concern over the continuous impact of insecurity on Plateau’s economic and developmental progress. He highlighted how persistent attacks have hindered farming and other economic activities, keeping the state from reaching its full potential.

“Insurgency and terrorism have robbed us of the wealth of our land. Our people are afraid to farm or pursue livelihoods. As a government, we are investing in technology and deploying strategic measures to curb this cycle of violence,” he noted.

During his visit, the governor extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed and assured them that his administration would pursue justice relentlessly. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting security agencies while urging them to scale up their efforts.

Governor Mutfwang also acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu in the fight against insecurity and promised enhanced collaboration between the state government and federal security structures.

“We are working to correct the lapses of the past. However, real and lasting security solutions must begin within our communities. The safety of our people is a shared responsibility,” he said.

As Plateau State continues to grapple with frequent violent attacks, Governor Mutfwang’s message serves as both a call to action and a reassurance of the government’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the region.
