Marking an important milestone in our nation’s history, we join the global community in celebrating the International Day of Education. This occasion underscores the vital role of education in driving development and fostering innovation. Notably, it coincides with the 100th anniversary of Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha, which will be commemorated tomorrow. The school’s centenary celebration will highlight its significant contributions to education in Nigeria, Peter Obi shared on his X handle
According him, the celebration of these intertwined events serves as a reminder of the critical role education plays in unlocking the nation’s potential. In recognition of these milestones, schools across Anambra State, both in urban centers and remote areas, were visited to emphasize the importance of education.

During a visit to DMGS, the school’s illustrious alumni were celebrated, with students encouraged to follow in their footsteps. Among the notable alumni are Prof. Kenneth Dike, Africa’s first Black Vice-Chancellor; Emmanuel Ifeajuna, the first African to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games; Bishop Jonathan Onyemelukwe; Prof. James Ezeilo, former Vice-Chancellor of Nsukka; Prof. Ilochi Okafor, former VC of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Dr. Tim Menakaya, a former Minister of Health; and Chief Simon Okeke, former Chairman of the Police Service Commission. Their accomplishments exemplify the transformative power of education and serve as an inspiration to the younger generation.
Encouraging students to take their studies seriously, it was emphasized that dedication and hard work can lead to remarkable achievements, just like these distinguished individuals.
A visit was also made to Nmiata-Anam, a community that holds special significance. During a gubernatorial campaign, the town was only accessible by boat due to the absence of roads. A promise was made to construct a bridge and road, which has since been fulfilled, connecting the community to the rest of the state and improving access to education and economic opportunities.
Further to the celebration of the International Day of Education, visits were conducted at Community Primary School, Nmiata-Anam, and Our Lady of Lourdes Secondary School, Nmiata-Anam. Interaction with students reinforced the importance of education, with assurances given to support the schools in various capacities.

Education remains a powerful tool for training a skilled workforce, fostering innovation, and driving sustainable development. Countries such as India, China, Morocco, and Egypt have demonstrated how strategic investments in education can enhance national progress and global standing.
Despite its potential, Nigeria continues to face challenges within the education sector, including inadequate funding, a shortage of qualified teachers, outdated curricula, corruption, and insecurity. It is imperative for the government to address these issues and ensure that every child in Nigeria has access to quality education. By prioritizing education, the nation can build a productive population that will propel it toward development and prosperity.
As these milestones are celebrated, it is a collective responsibility to work towards a future where every child has access to quality learning opportunities. Investing in education is key to unlocking the full potential of the nation and building a brighter future for all.
