December 26 marks a poignant milestone for the family of the late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, as his widow, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, took to social media to commemorate one year since his passing.

In a deeply emotional post on her x handle, Betty reflected on the void left by her husband’s death, writing, “AKETI ETERNAL: Today, December 26, is 365 days since you left me. 💔 I’m still speechless!” Her tribute, accompanied by a touching video of their moments together, offered a glimpse into the profound bond they shared.

One of Akeredolu’s most notable achievements was his unwavering advocacy for regional security in the South-West. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun. This initiative was designed to protect citizens from the growing threats of banditry and Boko Haram insurgency, demonstrating his commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

Rotimi Akeredolu, fondly called “Aketi,” was a distinguished lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and prominent political figure. Born on July 21, 1956, in Owo, Ondo State, Akeredolu carved a niche for himself as a fearless advocate for justice and development. His tenure as Governor of Ondo State, which began in 2017, was marked by significant strides in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

Akeredolu passed away on December 26, 2023, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape the state. His death, however, was not without controversies, with speculations surrounding the cause of his passing and the political implications it carried.

Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, a celebrated advocate for women’s empowerment and breast cancer awareness, stood steadfastly by her husband throughout his life and political career. As the First Lady of Ondo State, she championed initiatives like the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN), empowering countless women.

A mother to four children, Betty has remained a source of strength for the family and a vocal advocate for the causes she holds dear.

Rotimi Akeredolu’s passing ignited various debates. Reports of his illness surfaced months before his demise, sparking concerns about his capacity to govern. While official statements attributed his death to prolonged illness, the lack of clarity fueled speculation. Political observers noted the power tussles within the state’s leadership, as factions vied for control during his absence.
