Nigeria has lost one of its foremost elder statesmen, Pa Ayodele Adebanjo, a key figure in the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere. He passed away at the age of 96 at his Lekki, Lagos residence in the early hours of Friday, February 14, 2025.
His family confirmed the news in a statement expressing deep gratitude for his life of service. Signed by his children, Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, the statement described him as a relentless advocate for truth, justice, and national progress.
“His belief in a truly independent and progressive Nigeria remained unwavering, and he fought for it until his last breath,” the family said.
Pa Adebanjo, a former Organising Secretary of the Action Group, was a significant voice in Nigeria’s political and socio-cultural landscape. His impact spanned decades, with his advocacy for democratic governance, equity, and Yoruba interests making him a revered figure.
The family noted that consultations are ongoing with his friends, associates, and key stakeholders to finalize funeral arrangements, with details to be announced soon. A condolence register has been opened at his Lagos home and Isanya Ogbo country residence in Ogun State.
He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
