Determined to change the narrative of poor JAMB performance in his village, Alex Onyia has launched a comprehensive intervention program to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel. After discovering that 70% of students failed the last JAMB exam, he took it upon himself to ensure history does not repeat itself.
Rather than waiting for government action, Onyia implemented an intensive JAMB preparation program designed to provide students with structured learning support. Under this initiative, students undergo rigorous morning and evening study sessions, along with monthly Computer-Based Testing (CBT) using a database of 16 years’ worth of past questions across multiple subjects.
A major challenge Onyia identified was digital illiteracy among students. Many had never used a computer before, making the JAMB exam—conducted digitally—an intimidating experience. To address this, Onyia incorporated digital training into the program, ensuring that students become comfortable using a mouse and keyboard well before exam day.
“We track their performances on different topics and emphasize their weak areas across subjects,” Onyia stated. “Our mission is for all of them to score above 250.”
As part of his commitment, Onyia has pledged to pay the JAMB registration fees for all participating students. Additionally, any student who scores 300 and above will be awarded a full scholarship, further incentivizing academic excellence.
This initiative is another testament to Onyia’s dedication to transforming education in Southeastern Nigeria. By addressing both academic preparation and digital literacy, he is equipping young students with the skills and confidence needed to excel. With continued support, Onyia’s efforts are expected to significantly improve JAMB performance and open up greater opportunities for students in underserved communities.
