Suspected assassins have killed Yomi Adetula, the Director of Anti-Arms Smuggling at the Social Orientation and Safety (So-Safe) Corps in Ogun State. The tragic incident occurred in Idi-Iroko, within the Ipokia Local Government Area of the state.
Eyewitnesses reported that Adetula was attacked inside his church, located off Old Baggage Road in Idi-Iroko, on Sunday morning. Armed assailants stormed the premises shortly after 10 a.m., wielding firearms and other dangerous weapons.
According to local residents, initial gunshots failed to harm Adetula. “When they realized the bullets did not penetrate him, they resorted to using other weapons, including a hammer and machete, to inflict fatal injuries. Their method suggests they were hired assassins,” a witness told the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ).
Images reviewed by FIJ reveal the extent of Adetula’s injuries, showing his severely disfigured face and blood-soaked attire, allegedly resulting from gunshot wounds.
Adetula was identified as a crucial witness in FIJ’s legal defense against a libel case initiated by IBD Dende. The case stemmed from an investigative documentary and a series of social media disclosures by FIJ’s founder, ‘Fisayo Soyombo, which exposed smuggling operations.
Despite numerous threats to his life, FIJ has remained steadfast in Nigeria, continuing to uncover corruption within various agencies. The organization’s relentless investigative efforts have made it a vital force in holding authorities accountable.
Further details on the attack are expected as investigations continue.
