Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the UK’s Conservative Party, has sounded the alarm about the potential risks of political decline in Britain, drawing a stark comparison to the governance issues that have plagued Nigeria. In her first speech of the year, Badenoch warned that without significant reforms, Britain could find itself facing the same challenges that have hindered Nigeria for years.
During the event on Thursday, organized by Onward, a British think tank focused on social and economic issues, Badenoch emphasized the importance of restoring trust in government and positioning the Conservative Party as the solution to the country’s growing problems. She stressed that Britain’s political system must be safeguarded from failure, a fate she fears could mirror that of Nigeria’s troubled governance.
“My own experience shapes why this is so important to me,” Badenoch explained. “I know what it is like to have something and then to lose it. I don’t want Britain to lose what it has.”
Reflecting on her upbringing in a country marked by economic instability, she described how her once-wealthy family watched their financial stability crumble under inflation, despite their tireless efforts. At the age of 16, Badenoch moved to the UK with just £100 from her father, hoping for a better future. “I’ve lived with the consequences of bad governments,” she said. “I never want to see that happen here.”
Badenoch’s remarks have reignited controversy in Nigeria, where she has long faced criticism for her candid opinions. Prior to becoming Conservative leader, she had referred to Nigeria as a socialist nation plagued by corruption and insecurity.
In addition to her political critique, Badenoch has also recounted troubling personal experiences with Nigerian law enforcement, including an incident where police allegedly stole from her family. She contrasted this with her positive experiences with British police. “In Nigeria, the police would rob us,” she recalled, “but in the UK, I’ve had a completely different experience with law enforcement.”
