Ogechukwu Nkere, a prominent Biafra activist and acting prime minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), has engaged with United States lawmakers in Washington, D.C., seeking recognition for Biafra’s independence.
Nkere disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday via his X account, detailing his meetings with U.S. Senators and Congress members from February 6 to 13, 2025. The lobbying efforts were facilitated through Moran Global Strategies (MGS), a Washington-based lobbying firm.
According to Nkere, he met with several key U.S. lawmakers, including Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Bill Haggerty (R-TN), Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH), Senator Steve Daines (R-MT), and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS). Additionally, he held discussions with Congressman Craig Goldman (R-TX) and participated in a joint meeting with a senior delegation from the Ambazonia Governing Council (AGovC) at the office of Congressman Gus Bilirakis (R-FL).
During these meetings, Nkere briefed the lawmakers on the Declaration of Independence of the United States of Biafra and appealed for their support in securing international recognition for the secessionist movement.
“BRGIE, being the only legal entity recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice for Biafra’s independence restoration, has taken a significant diplomatic step forward following a series of high-level engagements with U.S. Senators and Congresspersons in Washington, D.C.,” the statement read.
Nkere highlighted that the diplomatic initiative follows the Declaration Convention held in Lahti, Finland, in 2024, where 517 Biafran delegates worldwide ratified a self-referendum conducted between February 1 and November 28, 2024. A formal declaration document was subsequently signed by all delegates.
“These meetings mark a crucial step in solidifying international support for Biafra’s independence and diplomatic recognition on a global scale,” he emphasized.
Nkere reiterated BRGIE’s commitment to securing international backing for Biafra’s sovereignty and affirmed that the group remains steadfast in its mission, looking forward to continued engagement with senior U.S. officials.
In a related development, BRGIE recently sent a formal request to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, urging him to recognize Biafra’s independence.
