The people of Oyo State and Nigeria at large are mourning the loss of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, the former governor of Oyo State, who passed away at the age of 89. His death occurred in the early hours of Sunday, just months before he would have celebrated his 90th birthday.
Olunloyo’s legacy in Nigerian politics and education is significant. As the first Ibadan-born governor of Oyo State, he served briefly between October and December of 1983, just before the military coup ended the Second Republic. His contributions extended far beyond the governor’s office, as he held prominent educational roles, including being the first Rector of both Ibadan Polytechnic and Kwara State Polytechnic, among other distinguished positions.
Known for his titles as the Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, Olunloyo’s remarkable service to the nation left a lasting impact on those around him. A family source confirmed that Olunloyo had been grappling with age-related health conditions in recent weeks. “His lifelong dedication to the nation and humanity is a tremendous source of pride for his family and associates, even as we cope with the weight of this loss,” the source remarked.
Family members have indicated that burial arrangements will be made public in due time.
Further details will be provided as they become available.
