Three Enugu Lawmakers Dump Labour Party, Rejoin PDP

In a significant political shift, three lawmakers representing various constituencies in Enugu State have officially defected from the Labour Party (LP) back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), strengthening the ruling party’s influence in the state.

The lawmakers—Hon. Dennis Agbo (Igboeze/Udenu Federal Constituency), Hon. Mark-Chidi Obetta (Igboeze South/Nsukka Federal Constituency), and Hon. Malachi-Okey Onyechi (Nsukka West State Constituency)—were received at the PDP state secretariat in Enugu on Thursday amidst party fanfare and renewed political pledges.

Their defection follows a growing wave of returns to the PDP. Earlier this week, Labour Party stalwarts Emeka Mamah and Titus Odo also rejoined the PDP, coming just weeks after the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, made a similar move.

All five politicians were previously PDP members before they left the party to contest under the Labour Party banner during the 2023 general elections.

Speaking during the event, Hon. Onyechi expressed delight over his return, describing it as a homecoming. He commended Governor Peter Mbah’s developmental achievements, particularly his N2 billion grassroots infrastructure project, which spans all 260 political wards in the state.

Hon. Obetta cited key infrastructural developments across sectors—transport, education, health, and hospitality—as motivating factors behind his decision. “Enugu State stands to benefit more with collective support for Governor Mbah’s vision,” he stated.

Hon. Agbo also hailed his constituents for their unwavering support and described the PDP as the ideal platform to drive progressive change in Enugu. He predicted a sharp decline in the Labour Party’s presence, saying, “There will be no Labour Party again in Enugu. The opposition is fading.”

Governor Mbah was praised by all three lawmakers for his visionary leadership and was openly endorsed for a second term in office.

In his remarks, PDP State Chairman, Hon. Martin Chukwunwike, welcomed the returning members, noting that their defection marked the end of the turbulence experienced during the 2023 elections.

“With today’s defection, the political tsunami of 2023 is officially over. We are now set for a smooth and unified 2027,” Chukwunwike declared.
