Lagos, Nigeria — Dr. Jibril Mustapha, President of the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organization and former leader of the Buhari Youth Organization (BYO), has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement released on Sunday in Lagos, Mustapha emphasized the need for strong, unifying leadership as Nigeria faces mounting challenges. He urged Jonathan to answer the growing calls for his return to office, citing his leadership qualities and track record of democratic governance.
“As we approach the 2027 elections, Nigeria needs a candidate who can genuinely represent the interests of every citizen,” Mustapha stated. “We believe former President Goodluck Jonathan is uniquely positioned to unite the country and guide us toward a more prosperous future.”
Highlighting Nigeria’s current economic struggles, insecurity, unemployment, and rising banditry, Mustapha stressed the urgent need for a leader embodying integrity, inclusivity, and a strong commitment to national unity.
“Nigeria is at a crossroads,” he continued. “We face critical issues threatening our stability and progress. Former President Jonathan’s proven dedication to democratic values and the welfare of all Nigerians makes him the ideal candidate to lead at this pivotal moment.”
Mustapha praised Jonathan’s tenure for promoting inclusive governance and economic development, asserting that his return to leadership could help restore Nigeria’s standing both domestically and on the international stage.
Justice Inyang Ekwo, who delivered the judgment, clarified that Jonathan’s initial assumption of office in 2010 did not constitute a full presidential term, as he succeeded President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua following his death. Therefore, according to the ruling, Section 137 of the Constitution does not prevent Jonathan from seeking another term.
The Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation’s call comes amid growing discussions on the leadership direction Nigeria must take ahead of 2027, with many stakeholders emphasizing the need for experience, vision, and unity at the nation’s helm.
