Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has apologized to former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, after a tense verbal exchange between Ezekwesili and Ebonyi North Senator, Onyekachi Nwaebonyi during a Senate hearing.
The incident happened on Tuesday during a session of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. The committee was reviewing a new petition from Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. She has accused Akpabio of intimidation, defamation, and sexual harassment.
Ezekwesili attended the hearing as a witness in support of Akpoti-Uduaghan, along with legal counsel Abiola Akiode and petitioner Zubairu Yakubu. During the session, Nwaebonyi, representing Akpabio, repeatedly interrupted Ezekwesili. Frustrated by the interruptions, she responded, “Please, will you shut up? Compose yourself and stop making noise.”
Her remark angered Nwaebonyi, who fired back: “You’re a fool. What do you mean? Why are you talking to me like that? I will not take it. You’re an insult to womanhood. People like you cannot be here.”
Reacting to the incident, Akpoti-Uduaghan posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, expressing regret over the situation and praising Ezekwesili’s contributions to governance and national development.
“Ma’am, I apologize for the insults. Know you took them for me… for us … as a mother and as a leader. Know that you are a true icon of integrity, courage, and visionary leadership,” Akpoti-Uduaghan wrote. “Your unwavering commitment to good governance, education, and democracy continues to inspire generations. A champion of accountability… Nigerians appreciate you. I celebrate your brilliance, resilience, and selfless service. You are a hero.”
The exchange has sparked discussions on the need for respect and civility in public service, with many commending Ezekwesili for standing firm on the principles of accountability and ethical leadership.
