The Egbeda Local Government Traditional Council in Ibadan has called on the Nigerian Police Force to undertake an urgent retraining and sensitization programme for its officers following the tragic death of a secondary school student reportedly caused by a stray police bullet.
The student, who was on his way to write a West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) paper on Tuesday morning, was allegedly hit by a bullet fired during a police chase near the Gbagi Market area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Acting Chairman of the Egbeda Traditional Council, High Chief Sharafadeen Alli, the council expressed deep grief over the incident and condemned the use of firearms in densely populated areas, especially near schools and residential neighborhoods.
“This is an unbearable loss, not just for the family of the deceased, but for the entire community and the future of our society,” said Alli, who also serves as the Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland. “It is deeply disturbing that a young life full of promise was ended so abruptly and needlessly.”

He stressed the urgent need for police officers to exercise maximum restraint and adhere to strict professional standards, especially when operating in civilian zones. Alli also emphasized the sanctity of human life, particularly that of children.
The council has demanded a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident and has called on the police authorities to identify and prosecute the officer involved. They also urged the government to ensure that the victim’s family receives adequate compensation and psychological support.
“No enforcement operation should come at the expense of innocent lives,” Alli stated, reaffirming the council’s commitment to public safety and justice.
He extended condolences, on behalf of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, and the entire traditional council, to the grieving family and the affected school community.
