In a dramatic turn of events within Nigeria’s political landscape, the Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Julius Abure, has announced the indefinite suspension of six top-ranking members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti — the party’s only serving governor.
The suspension, which took immediate effect, was announced in a statement released on Wednesday by the party’s National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
According to the statement, the disciplinary action stems from allegations of anti-party activities. Governor Otti and five others were investigated by a five-man Disciplinary Committee, led by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi. After thorough deliberations, the NEC ratified the committee’s recommendations.

Those suspended include:
- Dr. Alex Otti – Governor of Abia State
- Senator Ireti Kingibe
- Senator Darlington Nwokocha
- Hon. Victor Afam Ogene
- Hon. Amobi Ogah
- Hon. Seyi Sowunmi
“These individuals are hereby suspended indefinitely from the party and all related activities,” the statement read. “By this action, they are no longer authorized to represent or act on behalf of the Labour Party in any capacity. Relevant institutions including INEC, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, the National Assembly, and security agencies have been duly notified.”
In a clarification, the party noted that Nenadi Usman was not included in the suspension list as she is not a registered member. Rather, she is recognized as a supporter of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate through the Obidient Support Group.
The party further took a swipe at Usman, urging her to “explain to Nigerians how she acquired her extensive wealth, including a radio station in Kaduna and multiple properties within and outside Nigeria.”

In addition to the suspensions, the party reiterated its firm stance against entering any political coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to the statement, the LP leadership believes those pushing for such alliances “lack the competence and integrity” to manage a unified political front.
The Labour Party will not entertain any merger or coalition proposals,” the statement added. “We will contest the 2027 elections independently. The individuals championing these coalitions have failed in managing even a single party. Entrusting them with a coalition would be disastrous.
