Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away in London following a prolonged illness. The sad news was confirmed on Sunday, July 13, 2025, through a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the official announcement, Buhari died at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time at a medical facility in the United Kingdom.
President Tinubu, expressing his grief over the loss, extended heartfelt condolences to the late leader’s family, especially to his widow, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, during a phone call. In honor of the former president, Tinubu has directed that Nigerian flags be flown at half-mast nationwide.
As part of the government’s protocol and in a gesture of respect, Vice President Kashim Shettima has been assigned to travel to the UK to oversee arrangements for the repatriation of the former president’s remains.
In a separate brief statement, Garba Shehu, Buhari’s former spokesman, also confirmed the death. “The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a London clinic. May Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” Shehu said.
Muhammadu Buhari served as the elected President of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023. He had previously led the country as a military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.
