Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, has announced an immediate ban on heavy-duty trucks using the one-way route through Deco Bridge following a devastating tanker explosion that claimed the lives of at least 86 people. The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday, January 18, involved a petrol tanker that crashed in the area, resulting in a massive inferno that left scores dead and many others injured.
During his visit to the explosion site at Deco Junction, Governor Bago expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and described the incident as a tragic and avoidable disaster. He assured the public that his administration would take necessary measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
“This incident is truly pathetic and heartbreaking. The lives lost here can never be replaced, and we must do everything within our power to ensure that such tragedies do not happen again,” Bago stated.
In response to the incident, the governor directed relevant state agencies to enforce strict compliance with the new traffic regulations, emphasizing the importance of protecting citizens and infrastructure. He further called on stakeholders in the transport sector to adhere to safety standards and avoid reckless driving practices that endanger public safety.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his condolences to the victims and their families, expressing solidarity with the people of Niger State during this difficult time. Tinubu has also instructed the Ministry of National Orientation to intensify public awareness campaigns on road safety and the dangers of transporting hazardous materials without proper precautions.
Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, also weighed in on the tragedy, calling for urgent action to address Nigeria’s failing road infrastructure and inadequate vehicle maintenance practices. In a statement on his social media handle, Saraki emphasized that systemic issues must be tackled to prevent further occurrences.
“The horrific petrol tanker explosion at Deco Junction is a grim reminder of the risks Nigerians face daily due to poor road conditions and lack of proper maintenance. Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensuring the safety of all citizens,” Saraki stated.
As investigations into the cause of the tanker explosion continue, residents and commuters have welcomed the governor’s proactive measures but have also called for long-term infrastructural improvements to prevent future tragedies.
