In yet another tragic error, a Nigerian military fighter jet targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group mistakenly bombed two communities in Sokoto State, resulting in the deaths of several villagers and injuries to many others. The airstrike occurred around 7 a.m. on Wednesday in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, both located in Silame Local Government Area.
According to Daily Trust, the communities are situated near Surame Forest, a known hideout for the Lakurawa group and other bandits. Malam Yahya, a resident of Silame, described the incident as devastating. “These were peaceful villagers, with no connection to criminal activities,” he said.
Another local source disclosed that over ten people lost their lives, while numerous others suffered injuries. Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Daftarana, the chairman of Silame LGA, confirmed the attack, describing it as a grave tragedy. “The villagers were sitting peacefully when bombs began dropping on the communities. It’s too early to determine the full extent of casualties, as assessments are ongoing,” Daftarana stated.
This incident is not an isolated occurrence. Similar errors by the military have raised alarm in recent times. Just months ago, a military airstrike in Kaduna State mistakenly targeted civilians, leading to significant loss of life. Such incidents have fueled public outcry, with many demanding better intelligence and operational precision to avoid further civilian casualties.
When contacted, Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, clarified that the incident was unrelated to police activities.
As the affected communities grapple with the aftermath, the Nigerian military faces increasing scrutiny over its operations, particularly in conflict-prone areas where mistakes have resulted in devastating consequences.
