The Nigerian Army has confirmed the neutralization of several members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during a series of operations in Imo State on Friday, December 27, 2024.

According to a statement issued by Captain Joseph Baba Akubo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 34 Artillery Brigade, troops swiftly responded to a distress call regarding an IPOB/ESN attack on Osina Community in Ideato North Local Government Area. The soldiers, who were returning from routine patrols, engaged the attackers with overwhelming firepower, forcing them to retreat.

“Regrettably, two security agents lost their lives during the exchange, and another remains missing,” the statement read. The attackers reportedly seized the deceased officers’ weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and a tear gas launcher. Efforts to recover the missing officer are ongoing.

The army disclosed that during a follow-up operation in Nkwachi Community, troops re-engaged the fleeing assailants, leading to another intense firefight. One member of the group was neutralized, while others escaped into a nearby forest. An AK-47 rifle with a fully loaded magazine was recovered during this phase of the operation.

The pursuit continued into Umalouma Forest, where a fierce encounter ensued. Overwhelmed by superior firepower, the attackers abandoned additional weapons and fled with severe injuries. Recovered items included:

  • Five AK-47 rifles
  • One Fabrique Nationale rifle
  • Two magazines
  • One tear gas launcher

The 34 Artillery Brigade remains committed to ensuring peace and security in Imo State, particularly during the festive period. Troops are actively exploiting the area to dismantle hideouts and apprehend fleeing criminals.

The military has urged IPOB/ESN members and other criminal groups to surrender to the nearest military formation or face decisive action. Additionally, residents have been encouraged to provide timely intelligence to support the ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.

For residents of Imo State, the Nigerian Army reassures that their safety remains a top priority during the Yuletide season.
