In a fresh development at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has resumed under the oversight of Justice James Omotosho. The case, which revolves around allegations of treason, has also seen a shift in Kanu’s legal representation.
Marking a significant change in the defense team, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Kanu Agabi has taken over as lead counsel, while the prosecution remains under the direction of Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN). This alteration in legal counsel is expected to influence the dynamics of the proceedings.
During the court session, Chief Agabi took the floor to formally address the court, beginning with an apology on behalf of his client. He acknowledged that Kanu had been overwhelmed by frustration for an extended period, which led to past contentious remarks where he called the court shrine of injustice, including criticisms against Justice Binta Nyako. Agabi extended apologies to Justice Nyako, the prosecution, and Kanu’s previous legal team, underscoring the need for reconciliation.
Highlighting his client’s character, Agabi noted that while individuals may hold differing views, Kanu remains steadfast in his beliefs. He urged the court to acknowledge human imperfections and to prioritize resolution over conflict.
Responding to the apology, the prosecution team welcomed the gesture and assured the court of their commitment to facilitating a swift and fair hearing. Awomolo emphasized the emotionally charged nature of the case and the impact it has had on all parties involved.
Justice Omotosho took note of the prolonged nature of the trial, remarking that Kanu, who was first arraigned in 2015 at the age of 47, is now 57 and still awaiting resolution. He suggested that the uncertainty surrounding the case might have contributed to Kanu’s previous statements. Additionally, the judge expressed understanding and extended an apology to the prosecution on behalf of the defendant.
