OYO, NIGERIA — A new chapter in the illustrious history of the Oyo Empire began on Saturday as Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade was officially crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The coronation, held amidst grandeur and rich cultural display, attracted a host of Nigeria’s most prominent traditional rulers and political dignitaries.
The historic occasion saw the presence of key royal figures such as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar; and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III. Also in attendance were the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu—representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, alongside former military administrator of Oyo State, Maj. Gen. Oladayo Popoola (rtd).
Delivering the president’s message, Chief Adelabu emphasized the enduring legacy and national importance of the Alaafin throne. He described the coronation as not only a cultural milestone but a reaffirmation of leadership rooted in history and relevance.
“The Alaafin stool is a symbol of unity and an embodiment of the Yoruba people’s resilience,” Adelabu stated. “This is not just a traditional role—it is a platform for bridging our cultural heritage with the demands of modern governance.”
He expressed confidence in the new monarch’s ability to lead with wisdom and strengthen unity within Yorubaland and Nigeria at large.
Speaking during the event, Governor Seyi Makinde addressed public speculations surrounding the selection process. The governor reaffirmed that the final choice of the new Alaafin was guided solely by traditional customs and Ifa divination.
“No one influenced this decision,” he said. “While some attempted to lobby, Ifa did not choose them. I stood by the process because the integrity of this sacred institution must remain intact.”
Governor Makinde also disclosed that he rejected candidates whose supporters allegedly attempted to sway the process with financial inducements.
In his remarks, Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, described the event as a proud moment for Yorubaland. He clarified that while he plays a vital role in the affairs of the Oyo Kingdom, he was not involved in the selection of the new king.
“My duty is to protect the peace and unity of this land. I am not part of the selection process, but I remain committed to the progress and safety of Oyo,” he said.
Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, in his first public address as Alaafin, expressed deep gratitude to the people of Oyo for their trust and support. He pledged to uphold the rich legacy of the throne while working toward the collective advancement of the kingdom.
“I am humbled by the confidence you have placed in me,” the monarch said. “With God’s guidance and the support of our people, I will rule with integrity and foster development and unity across the land.”
The coronation of Oba Akeem Owoade marks a significant milestone in the cultural and political life of the Oyo Kingdom. As the 46th Alaafin takes his place on the ancient throne, expectations remain high for a reign that will uphold tradition while embracing the future.
