Former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has explained that the recent defection of key political leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was a strategic move to ensure Delta State gains greater access to federal resources and support.
Speaking on Monday at a formal reception held at the Cenotaph in Asaba, Okowa, alongside Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of Delta’s development and future.
“There comes a time in the life of a people when a change of direction becomes necessary for the common good,” Okowa stated. “This decision was taken to reposition Delta State for better access to the goodwill, power, and resources available at the federal level.”
Okowa, who governed Delta State for eight years under the PDP, lamented the challenges of leading while in opposition to the federal government, stating that the state lost significant opportunities during his tenure.
“I did my best as governor, but we lost a lot simply because we were not aligned with the center. Governor Oborevwori is working hard, and he needs every possible support from Abuja to succeed. Connecting to the federal structure is critical for Delta’s growth,” he explained.
Describing the defection as a “bold, strategic, patriotic, and well-thought-out” decision, Okowa called for unity among all APC members in Delta, both old and new, urging them to work together for the state’s progress.
“This is the time to embrace one another with oneness of heart. Our collective goal must be to defend and build Delta State, ensuring it occupies its rightful place nationally,” he said.
The move, which involved a large contingent of former PDP members, including Governor Oborevwori, was announced last week and is expected to dramatically reshape Delta State’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
Governor Oborevwori also reaffirmed his commitment to delivering on his mandate after denying the rumor initially about the defection, expressing confidence that closer ties with the federal government would accelerate development efforts across Delta
