Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, joined the celebrations in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to mark the 88th birthday of Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo. In a statement shared on social media, Obi described Obasanjo as a revered elder statesman and father figure whose contributions to Nigeria’s growth remain immeasurable.

Obi highlighted Obasanjo’s significant achievements during his tenure as Nigeria’s President from 1999 to 2007. He noted that under Obasanjo’s leadership, Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew from approximately $59 billion in 1999 to $278 billion by the time he left office in 2007. Similarly, GDP per capita rose from about $490 to $1,800, while the country’s foreign debt was significantly reduced from $32 billion to $3.2 billion, with a marked increase in foreign reserves. Obi commended the former leader’s patriotism, bold sacrifices, and unwavering commitment to national unity.

Olusegun Obasanjo is a retired military general and statesman who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1976 to 1979 and later as a democratically elected President from 1999 to 2007. His first rise to power came after the assassination of then-Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed, in 1976. As leader, Obasanjo played a crucial role in returning Nigeria to civilian rule, handing over power to President Shehu Shagari in 1979.

Following years of military rule, Obasanjo returned to the political scene and won the 1999 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), becoming the first democratically elected leader after years of dictatorship. His administration focused on economic reforms, debt relief, anti-corruption measures, and infrastructural development. One of his notable achievements was negotiating the Paris Club debt relief, which led to a substantial reduction in Nigeria’s foreign debt burden.

Beyond politics, Obasanjo has remained an influential voice in African leadership, diplomacy, and governance. He has served as a mediator in various regional conflicts and continues to advocate for democracy and good governance across the continent.

He continues to participate in global discussions on Africa’s economic and political future.
