Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and a prominent opposition figure, has categorically dismissed rumors about his alleged arrest. In a statement shared on his official X handle, Obi labeled the reports as baseless and another instance of fake news targeting his person.
“I have been made aware of a circulating fake news about my alleged arrest. Let me state unequivocally that these claims are entirely false. I am currently at my home in Onitsha, Anambra State,” he clarified.
This isn’t the first time such rumors have been spread about Obi. He referenced a similar incident in September of the previous year when he was in Rwanda. At the time, false reports alleged that the Department of State Services (DSS) had invaded his home. Now, while in Onitsha, new claims suggest he was arrested in Abuja.
The recurring fake news is widely seen as an attempt to undermine Obi’s image and create distractions from the pressing issues facing Nigeria. His consistent and sincere criticism of the Tinubu administration has reportedly unsettled those in power. Obi’s vocal stance on governance, transparency, and accountability has made him a target of both political and personal attacks, including threats to his life.
In his statement, Obi urged Nigerians not to be swayed by these distractions, emphasizing the importance of staying focused on addressing the country’s critical challenges. “The motive of these peddlers cannot be positive, but let us not allow baseless rumors to distract us from the critical challenges we face as a nation,” he said.
Despite the fake news and threats, Obi remains committed to advocating for a better Nigeria. He expressed gratitude to the public for their unwavering support, saying, “I thank the public for the concern, support, and dedication to the cause of a better Nigeria that is possible!”
As tensions between Obi and the Tinubu administration continue to rise, the opposition leader’s resolve to speak out against perceived injustices and misgovernance remains unshaken.
