For Peter Obi, philanthropy is far more than an act of generosity—it is a way of life driven by a deep concern for the welfare of others. The former Anambra State governor and prominent political figure has consistently demonstrated a commitment to improving lives through targeted interventions in education, healthcare, and social empowerment.
During a recent visit to the Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Ndubisi Obi, Obi discussed his pledge to allocate over ₦1.5 billion to charitable causes in 2024. He explained that his passion for giving is rooted in a genuine desire to create meaningful change, rather than any quest for personal recognition or political advantage.
As part of his efforts, Obi recently donated ₦10 million to support the College of Nursing Sciences in Amichi, led by Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor, and another ₦10 million to ongoing projects at ADON College of Health Technology in Nnewi. Reflecting on these contributions, he emphasized the satisfaction he derives from seeing his resources directly transform lives.
“My journey of giving didn’t begin with public office—it has always been a core part of who I am,” Obi revealed. “I’ve supported disaster relief efforts, such as rebuilding Haiti after the earthquake, and provided assistance to communities long before I became governor. For me, philanthropy is about lifting others, no matter the circumstances.”
Obi also shared the profound impact of his visit to several facilities managed by Bishop Ndubisi, including a rehabilitation center for recovering addicts and a special needs school for children. He described these encounters as deeply moving and a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritizing humanity above all else. “When you meet people working tirelessly to better the lives of the underserved, it’s impossible to remain indifferent. Supporting such initiatives isn’t about self-interest but about making a real difference in the world,” he remarked.
Responding to claims that his philanthropy could be a strategy to enhance his public image, Obi dismissed such speculations. Instead, he framed his giving as a moral responsibility and an expression of gratitude for the opportunities he has had in life. “Giving back is a duty I owe to society, and it’s one I will continue to fulfill for as long as I am able. The goal is not recognition but to leave a lasting impact that uplifts communities,” he said.
