The Enugu State Police Command has refuted claims circulating online that herdsmen have overrun homes and schools in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, describing the reports as “baseless, mischievous, and misleading.”
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the Command clarified that no part of Eha-Amufu or any other community in Enugu State has been invaded, placed under siege, or displaced as alleged. The police explained that the reported “overrun farm settlements” were actually temporary shelters used by farmers, who periodically return to their villages.
The statement acknowledged that farmer-herder clashes had previously occurred in Eha-Amufu in 2021 and 2022, but emphasized that joint security operations had since restored peace and stability to the area. It also commended the Enugu State Government’s efforts in bolstering security under Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, highlighting the following key interventions:
- Deployment of 150 military personnel and well-equipped Special Forces to maintain law and order.
- Ongoing construction of the 21.7-kilometer Agape-Agu Mgbuji-Ogbete access road to improve security and connectivity in the affected communities.
The Police Command criticized the media platform responsible for the report, accusing it of using unrelated images to mislead the public. A forensic digital analysis revealed that some of the pictures included in the publication were sourced from incidents in neighboring states, including visuals shared by Amnesty International from a February 4, 2025, attack on Nkalaeha community.
Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, urged residents to disregard the false reports and assured them of the Command’s continued commitment to ensuring peace and security in the state. He called on the public, particularly residents of Eha-Amufu, to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies by reporting genuine security concerns through official channels.
While the state government has faced criticism in the past over security challenges, this latest development underscores ongoing efforts to address such concerns. Authorities continue to urge caution against spreading unverified reports that could incite panic and disrupt communal harmony.
