The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing demolition of properties across Abuja. In a recent statement, Senator Kingibe emphasized the need for urban development to adhere to due process and respect for the rights of FCT residents.
According to the Senator, while compliance with urban planning regulations is crucial for a thriving capital city, it must be balanced with fairness, transparency, and proper notification. She stressed that residents should not be unjustly displaced or denied the opportunity to address concerns about their properties before any demolition is carried out.
“The FCT belongs to all Nigerians,” Kingibe stated. “As such, governance here should reflect the highest standards of accountability and justice. I am committed to standing firmly for what is right and just for the people of the FCT.”

The demolitions, which have sparked widespread anxiety among residents, have also raised questions about the approach of relevant authorities. Senator Kingibe called on these authorities to prioritize dialogue and follow established legal frameworks to maintain public trust.
“Urban development must not come at the expense of human dignity,” she added. “Residents deserve to be treated with fairness and given ample time to address any issues surrounding their properties. Together, we can build a city that thrives not only in infrastructure but also in the confidence of its people.”
The Senator further assured FCT residents of her commitment to closely monitor developments, engage with stakeholders, and advocate for policies that balance modernization with the protection of their rights.
The demolition exercises, spearheaded by the Minister of the FCT, have been met with mixed reactions, with some applauding the government’s efforts to restore the city’s master plan while others decry the human impact of these actions. Senator Kingibe’s intervention signals a growing call for a more people-centered approach to governance in the capital city.
