Amid growing internal strife within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ned Nwoko has announced his resignation from the party he has been a part of since its formation in 1999. His decision, outlined in a letter dated January 30 and addressed to the party leadership in Ward 8, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, highlights concerns over factional conflicts that have made it increasingly difficult to uphold party unity and serve the people effectively.
Describing the situation as untenable, Nwoko pointed to previous crisis and most recent altercations among party officials as evidence of the worsening crisis. “Just this week, on January 29, top party functionaries engaged in physical confrontations, a clear indication of the irreconcilable divisions within the party,” he stated.
Reflecting on his time with the PDP, the senator expressed appreciation for the platform that enabled him to engage with his constituents during the 2022/2023 senatorial elections. However, he lamented that the party’s current structure in Delta State has become a major obstacle to fulfilling his campaign promises. “Regrettably, the present setup of the party in our state has not been conducive to achieving the goals I committed to during my campaign. After careful reflection, I have concluded that stepping away is necessary to remain true to my obligations to the people,” he explained.
Despite severing ties with the party, Nwoko reassured his supporters and constituents of his unwavering commitment to governance and public service. “While I part ways with the PDP, my dedication to statesmanship and the development of our state and nation remains resolute,” he affirmed.
As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriations and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Sports Development, Nwoko underscored that his decision was driven by a commitment to those he represents. “This choice is made in the best interest of my people, and I will continue to champion their welfare and progress,” he added.
In his closing remarks, he expressed sincere gratitude to the PDP leadership and members for their unwavering support over the years. Acknowledging the pivotal role the party played in his political career and in fostering connections with his constituents, he conveyed his appreciation for the opportunities it provided. Although he was stepping away, he wished the party success in navigating its internal challenges and hoped it would continue to uphold its commitment to democratic principles.
