Students from the Southeast region of Nigeria, under the umbrella of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), have extended their heartfelt condolences to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following the untimely death of one of its operatives, Aminu Sahabi Salisu. They expressed deep sorrow over the incident and reaffirmed their commitment to partnering with the Commission to combat financial crimes.
Salisu, an Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC (ASE II), lost his life on January 17, 2025, during an official operation in Awka, Anambra State. The tragic event, reportedly involving a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, has drawn widespread condemnation.
In a show of solidarity, a NANS South-East delegation, led by Comrade Charles Obinna Ijeomah, visited the EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on January 24, 2025.
During the visit, Ijeomah emphasized the importance of collaboration in tackling internet fraud among students. He stated, “As student leaders, it is our responsibility to ensure that we educate our members about the dangers of cybercrime, and we have been actively working towards this goal.”
He further condemned the incident and reassured the EFCC that such acts do not reflect the values of the Southeast community. “We deeply regret what happened and want to assure you that this does not define us. We are hardworking individuals, and criminal activities are not part of our culture,” Ijeomah said.
The NANS leader also pledged continued support to the EFCC’s efforts, noting that plans were underway to enhance awareness campaigns across university campuses in the region. “We are open to partnerships that will help enlighten our students and foster ethical values,” he added.
The delegation highlighted their intention to strengthen relationships with the EFCC through educational initiatives and sensitization programs aimed at discouraging internet crimes.
The visit reinforced the Southeast students’ dedication to promoting integrity and supporting law enforcement agencies in their fight against financial crimes.
