A corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, serving in Lagos, recently shared a video online expressing her frustrations over the worsening economic situation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In her emotional message, she described the government’s economic policies as “terrible” and lamented that the NYSC allowance was insufficient to cover basic needs.
Following the video’s circulation, Uguamaye reported receiving threats and was summoned by NYSC officials to appear at the Eti-Osa Local Government office. In response, human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, along with legal representatives, pledged to support her.
Sowore shared an update stating:
“The journey with youth Corper, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, has commenced in Lagos. She is scheduled to appear before the LGI today, and we will escort her to their offices. We are all en route with attorneys. @mrfestusogun, @yinka_oyesomi, and @justiceojienoh.”
However, upon arrival, the NYSC official who issued the summons was reportedly absent.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians condemning the threats against Uguamaye. Amnesty International emphasized her right to free speech, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar praised her courage. Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also weighed in, denouncing any attempt to silence citizens speaking against economic hardship. Popular activist and comedian Mr. Macaroni joined in, calling out the suppression of free speech and urging Nigerians to support her.

The situation continues to develop as more voices demand justice and fair treatment for the corps member.
