In a pivotal meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) on Friday in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed pressing concerns regarding Nigeria’s economic trajectory. He assured the religious leaders that while the ongoing economic reforms have posed significant challenges, they are necessary to secure the country’s future and ensure long-term stability.
Emphasizing the need for collective investment in nation-building, President Tinubu acknowledged the economic hardships faced by Nigerians. However, he maintained that these reforms, including the controversial fuel subsidy removal, are critical for preventing national bankruptcy and safeguarding future generations.
“The decision to remove the fuel subsidy was difficult, but it was a necessary step. We cannot continue spending the resources meant for our children and the generations yet unborn. Poverty transcends religious lines, and it is a challenge we must tackle together,” the President asserted.
Addressing concerns over the return of mission schools previously taken over by the government, Tinubu clarified that such institutions fall under the jurisdiction of state governments, not the federal administration. He cited his tenure as Governor of Lagos State as an example, highlighting his successful efforts in returning mission schools to their original proprietors.
Acknowledging the Catholic Church’s contributions to education and healthcare, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring access to quality education. He pointed to the establishment of NELFUND as a means to prevent students from dropping out due to financial constraints and promised to explore avenues to support students in private institutions.
On national security, the President underscored the efforts of security agencies in mitigating threats across the country. He assured that his administration remains committed to protecting all citizens, regardless of religious or ethnic affiliations. “Insecurity affects everyone—Christians, Muslims alike. My leadership is free from religious bias, and I remain committed to fostering national unity,” he stated.
The President expressed gratitude for the prayers of religious leaders, emphasizing that Nigeria is gradually witnessing economic improvements. He highlighted increased competition in the petroleum sector, improved agricultural yields, and a more favorable investment climate as indicators of progress.
Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, CBCN President and Archbishop of Owerri, led a delegation of 20 bishops to the State House. He congratulated Tinubu on his electoral victory and commended his efforts in repositioning the country. He also emphasized the importance of rekindling hope among citizens, particularly in light of economic difficulties.
“We recognize the impact of fuel subsidy removal and appreciate the tax reform initiatives aimed at generating resources for national development. However, we urge for greater efforts to restore confidence and inspire hope in the people,” Archbishop Ugorji remarked.
The bishops advocated for a well-defined approach to religion’s role in fostering national unity while safeguarding individual freedoms. They also called for an end to government-sponsored religious pilgrimages, citing the need for prudent resource management.
“Public funds should be directed toward pressing national needs rather than religious pilgrimages. Religious organizations should take full responsibility for such activities,” the CBCN President proposed.
Also present at the meeting was the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, who reinforced the administration’s stance on economic reforms. He acknowledged the temporary difficulties but assured that these measures were necessary for long-term prosperity.
The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, was also in attendance, further emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving national security.
As Nigeria navigates its economic transformation, President Tinubu remains steadfast in his resolve to implement policies that will shape a resilient and prosperous future for all citizens.
