President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s challenges and resisting forces that seek to stifle the nation’s progress. Speaking on Wednesday during a New Year homage by the National Assembly leadership and former principal officers, Tinubu expressed gratitude for their unwavering support over the past 19 months.
In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized the administration’s resolve to lead Nigeria to a brighter future. “The enslavers want us to be anything but enslaved people, but we say no. We are determined, capable, and resolute. We will take Nigeria to the Promised Land,” he declared at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos State.
Tinubu credited the legislature’s cooperation for enabling his administration to implement transformative policies. “It is for us to build a nation. We have confidence and competence,” he said. Highlighting the role of lawmakers in fostering development, he pledged to work harder, embrace intellectual curiosity, and make bold decisions for national growth.
Vice President Kashim Shettima also addressed the gathering, acknowledging the improving economy as evidence of effective collaboration between the executive and legislative branches. “The economy has started picking up, and in the coming weeks and months, Nigerians will start smiling for the better,” he said. Shettima cited global economic challenges, including the Russo-Ukrainian war, but expressed optimism that Nigeria is on a path to sustained growth.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended Tinubu’s reforms and assured him of the National Assembly’s support. “On this journey of restoration, transformation, and rebuilding the nation, you are not alone,” Akpabio said. He highlighted the administration’s achievements, such as the oversubscription of Nigeria’s Eurobond and improvements in the ease of doing business, as signs of growing investor confidence.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, praised Tinubu’s respect for the National Assembly, noting the significant representation of former lawmakers in key administrative roles. “The National Assembly today is more united than ever. There is nothing we have requested that you have not obliged,” Abbas stated.
Abbas also acknowledged the administration’s efforts to alleviate poverty, expressing hope for further improvements in the coming years. “Nigerians had more challenges at the beginning of 2023, but as the year ended, more food and prosperity started pouring in. We believe 2025 will be the ultimate year where every Nigerian will be proud of this administration,” he added.
Tinubu reiterated that the administration’s focus is on building a legacy for future generations. “It is for our tomorrow and for the babies yet unborn. Your commitment to value addition and a can-do spirit is for all of us together,” he said.
The meeting, which included top government officials and lawmakers, underscored the shared determination to overcome national challenges and ensure prosperity for all Nigerians.
