In a tragic turn of events, an ambush by unidentified gunmen has claimed the lives of two Chinese expatriates and a police escort in Uturu, located in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State. The attack occurred on Friday, April 4, 2025, as the victims were traveling to a project site.

The Abia State Police Command confirmed the incident through a statement released on Saturday, revealing that swift intervention by security operatives led to the successful rescue of four other Chinese nationals and two police officers who were also part of the convoy.

Preliminary reports indicate that the expatriates and their escorts came under heavy gunfire while en route to their company’s site at Agukwu-Amaya, Ndundu community in Uturu. The police identified the deceased as Mr. Quan, a project manager; Mr. Cai, his colleague; and Inspector Audu Saidu, one of the security personnel. The assailants also made away with the rifle belonging to the slain officer.

Following the distress call, security forces—including the police, military, and other agencies—launched an intensive search-and-rescue operation. The operation, which was led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Uturu, resulted in the recovery of three Chinese nationals without injuries, while another sustained wounds.

One of the rescued officers, Inspector Uba Ahmed, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg during the attack. Both he and the injured expatriate are currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abakaliki and are reported to be responding positively.

Another police escort, Inspector Ijeagwa Friday, was found unharmed during the operation. His rescue was credited to the joint efforts of security operatives and members of the local community who provided vital support.

To further bolster the investigation and security in the area, a tactical team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) visited the attack site on Saturday, April 5, as part of ongoing efforts to track down those responsible.

In his reaction, Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, condemned the attack in strong terms, assuring the public that the culprits will be apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law. He urged citizens of Abia State to remain calm, vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious activities or individuals to nearby police formations to aid ongoing security efforts.
